1. When primers are necessary: 

– When the surface is porous such as wood, masonry, bricks, or unpainted drywall.

– When heavy stains are present on the surface.

– When applying lighter-coloured paint over a darker surface (such as white over bare concrete)

2. When the primer is not necessary:

– The surface is already perfect for painting over.

– When painting over a color that is already similar to what you want to paint with (brown over brown, for instance)

– When painting a darker color over a surface with a lighter color.

3. Preparing right before work

There will still be heavy lifting at work during paint jobs, which happens before the home’s interior painting project. Consider all the furniture and décor that can be removed and can’t. 

Remove all furniture and decors as much as possible to allow for more space to work. If certain pieces of furniture can’t be moved, then you will need to have these appropriately covered.

2. Hasty finishing: Painting over moulds and imperfections

Proper surface preparation is essential for achieving a long-lasting paint finish. Stain-blocking primers can temporarily block the molds or prevent color from bleeding through. However, it does not kill the mold and will surely damage it soon. The proper preparation to deal with moldy walls is to stop the source of the moisture and kill the mold first before the painting job commences.

3. Not undoing imperfections

Using flat finishes is a lazy way to hide imperfections. However, defects are still there, leading to more significant problems later. For instance, paint bubbles will eventually pop and start more significant defects over time. Proper surface preparation is best painters to prevent these instances and fix the flaws before painting the other surfaces.

4. Painting the walls first before the ceiling

The proper rule of thumb is to paint a higher surface before painting a lower surface. The risk of painting the ceiling after painting the walls is the paint bleeding or splattering down to the walls. In that case, that is harder to rework.

Professional painters will risk imperfections or less-than-ideal finish if they ignore proper sanding before applying latex on an oil finish or oil on a latex finish. This coating will require a rough and clean finish.
